Is Electric Really the Future?
The ever increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EV) is a sign that one day in the future you will be driving an EV. But is it sustainable? Do we have the infrastructure to make this work in the near future? My instant take is that we are not ready for it, yet.
I am going to use my experience and current location to spell this out as to why we in rural PA won't be seeing a transition to primary electric vehicles any time soon. I live in a small town in eastern PA called Orwigsburg. We are behind the times and it takes a while for us to "catch up" with the rest of the more densely populated areas.
The closest EV charging station is 1.6 miles from my place of residence, not bad. The next 2 closest are 4.0 and 8.0 miles away. Overall those are still not bad. Now here is where it gets difficult, the closest Tesla Super Charger, which is the rapid charging station, is 26.5 miles away. 53 miles round trip for a faster charge.
This is just a start to why I feel the future isn't electric, at least not yet.
